What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation refers to the darkening of the skin that can occur in small patches or cover large areas and can affect anywhere on the body. There are three common types of hyperpigmentation, including melasma, sunspots and post-inflammatory. An increase in melanin production is a cause of these dark spots or patches, coming from too much sun exposure and inflammation. Melasma is caused by hormonal changes such as during pregnancy and can appear on the stomach and face. Sunspots, or liver spots, appear over time from sun exposure and can be commonly seen on areas exposed most to the sun such as the hands or face. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the result of a skin injury or inflammation such as acne, that darkens the areas affected. Hyperpigmentation skin care has been developed to assist in reducing the signs of and potential for this darkening of the skin to provide a more even complexion.

Skin Hyperpigmentation Treatment Creams & Serums

Due to its links to overexposure to the sun, one of the most common ways to help is by using a good sunscreen with an SPF level of 30 to 50 and to regularly apply this when out in the sun for long periods. This will protect the skin and the potential for hyperpigmentation alongside covering up with hats and clothing to block the sunlight.

Omni by Esther has a range of SPF 50+ sunshine block that are highly effective and silky smooth to apply. Available in 3 different shades, the clinically proven filters will protect from harmful UV rays and can be worn instead of moisturiser or under makeup. Also, Mesoestetic Melan 130+ is a pigment control sunscreen that provides very high protection to help regulate melanin synthesis, providing a natural tone to soften imperfections.

A brown spot treatment to consider is the Alphascience Alpha Bright Pigment Correcting Serum, which thanks to its powerful combination of vitamin C, ascorbic acid and phytic acid, can reduce the appearance of brown spots and any blemishes. Ideal for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, it’s suitable for all skin types.
